SaaS Content Management Systems (CMS) vs Open Source Software such as Magento - Part 1
by Chris Sutton
A question we often get asked by potential clients is what is the difference between open source systems such as Magento, Wordpress etc., and proprietry SaaS CMS systems. At SiteSuite we've been developing our own SaaS online business suite for over 13 years, as well as having some experience in the use of Magento in particular. Over the course of a few blogs we'll share our knowledge and experience
If you’re a business owner researching for the pending development of a new website or ecommerce website, there’s a strong chance that you’ll come across the term ‘HTML5’. In fact, most business owners with an interest in their online presence will already be familiar with HTML, a mark-up coding language for presenting content on the Internet. So what is HTML5 and why is it so hotly discussed?
Predicting trends in technology, or just about anything else, is always fun. Sometimes predictions can be wildly off the mark, but often there are clear trends that give some certainty to prediction.
One such trend is the growing use of HTML5 to build effective web apps that will make many native apps redundant.
This week sees the release of an important update that will affect Orders management within SiteSuite CMS.
Developed as part of our major 'Temando' integration, the new orders section also includes some changes requested as part of our recent feedback request. The new orders interface is designed for improved usability as well as providing a platform for incorporating additional functionality in future releases. In this release we’ve focussed on improving usability as well as adding some new features.
For many of us in the small business space we simply get started on the basis of a good idea, the need to do our own thing, or by accident when a hobby or interest goes well and expands into a business.
While there is normally always a wealth of life experience supporting a small business, the level of formal training or experience is often narrow rather than wide in scope. Against this backdrop, marketing activities can often be “hit and miss” or see long term goals surrendered at the first short term “stumbling block”.
While we all seem to be “time poor” these days, one of the activities we have been expanding at SiteSuite is the sharing of information and skills within our small business client community.
This week we flicked the switch on our new client Members Market, a market place for SiteSuite clients to market their products or services to other SiteSuite clients and their staff. As our client base is quite large, the potential for high numbers of traffic to visit the Members Market is encouraging. And with such good exposure, it’s an opportunity for new clients and especially start ups to introduce their wares.
In her acceptance speech for the Best Actress Oscar in 1984, Sally Field famously said “You like me, right now, you like me!”. We want to be liked, it’s nice to be liked but, until now, there hasn’t been a way to quantify all that liked-ness.
In my last article I talked about the differences between Social Media and Traditional Media and the importance of choosing the way you communicate through these channels. I’m going to continue in that vain with an example of how it’s done.
Just over three years ago Jasmine Star dropped out of Law School to become a Wedding Photographer. Although a keen photographer, she had no real professional experience, but had just been married herself and loved the idea of working on the other side of her wedding photographer’s lens.
It is just a few short years ago that the term ‘Social Media’ was confined to sociology labs and textbooks. Today, of course, Social Media is something that pervades just about every part of our lives, from family and relationships through to shopping and the way we get our news. People interact in the social media cloud hundreds of times a day. Some even prefer to communicate via social media than in a more conventional way, i.e. talking, and there's no doubt that social media is the new way to make friends and influence people.
